Thunderbird Nest HikeLocated 4 miles West of the Lake Manitoba Narrows, off of Highway #68, this nest was thought to once be home to the legendary Thunderbird. According to legend, the Thunderbird was a super eagle capable of transforming into a man and able to cause lightning by the flashing of its eyes. The Thunderbird was considered to be a guardian by natives of long ago. This nest was constructed to attract the Thunderbird as a guardian spirit. The builder would then be rewarded with special powers. Some say they feel the presence of something strange when they visit these mystical grounds.

Steep Rock The Cliffs of Steep Rock are located in the community of Steep Rock, about 90 km north of the Narrows, and are free to visit and explore, making it a great day trip from Chalet 5. As one of the most photographed locations in Manitoba, the Cliffs of Steep Rock are made of limestone. Thousands of years of wave action has molded them into sheer drops, caves and other unusual geological formations. The rocks are also a habitat for the Crocus. Many private beaches and coves may be utilized by day guests. Some picnic shelters and tables/benches are provided for your comfort, with convenient access to washrooms.

Moggey's Cabin
Percy Moggey was on the run from the law after a prison escape from Stony Mountain Penitentiary. He built this hideout in the middle of the bush and lived here for a period of time before being recaptured and sent back to prison. You can take a short hike and see this cabin for yourself. It is in excellent shape and there are still many artifacts in the cabin including shovel, pickax, saw, blankets, frying pan and dishes. There is a road sign just north of Eriksdale showing the way.

Hunting
A variety of hunting is available depending on the season. Black bear hunting is exceptionally popular among our international guests. Goose and deer hunting trails are nearby and there is elk hunting a bit further out of the area (about 45 min away). For more on hunting, see the page on Outfitting.
